Thank God. No, thank Vernon Jordan, Dr. Susan Rice and Terry Edmonds. Ok, and thanks John Kerry for showing us that Knowledge is Sexy. He did all the right things and sounded human, informed, considered and thoughtful.
Beside him, W could be seen as the trained, one-trick monkey he's always been. His simple, one-syllable, rote language looked stubborn instead of decisive; ignorant instead of determined, stupid instead of strategic.
He had all-too-obviously been coached on 4 or 5 messages that he repeated over and over, no matter the question:
"We *will* Win This War!"
"My opponent keeps changing his positions"
"Wrong War at the Wrong Time in the Wrong Place!?!"
"Mixed Signals"
"It's Hard Work!"
And interestingly -- Bush actually came clean to the American people about his real strategy for Iraq -- that a "Free Iraq" (or an Iraq under our control) will spread "freedom" throughout the Middle East. Hmm...maybe. I think it's much too early to tell if George's geo-political game will fall into place quite so quickly. Right now -- right this minute, have we spread freedom or created chaos?
I will credit Bush for sounding halfway intelligent on North Korea. I think his administration bungled things there and only in the past year has come back on track thanks to a lot of pressure from N.Korea's powerful neighbors.
I also thought he handled the Darfur genocide surprisingly well and seemed interested and engaged -- far more so than I thought he really was. It was really the only topic he handled knowledgeably, credibly and fluently.
Yes, it is hard work being president. And one of the players last night showed brilliantly that he was up to the challenge and how sub-standard the other truly is. One stood up and soared under enormous pressure and the other -- blinked, stared, smirked and got dry-mouth...
But what did Kerry say? You make no mention (as he also didn't mention) of Kerry's plan for anything.
Kerry sounded better, looked more confident, and was on top of his game. But what of his plan? More nations? Not likely. Have a meeting? Is that all it takes?
On N. Korea, you acknowledge that Bush "sounded halfway intelligent on North Korea." Is it because you know that he caught Kerry lying about it and exposed him with what is actually happening?
If Bush had never invaded Iraq, Kerry would already be a footnote in history. This unpopular war could have been waged after his second term began, but he, as did the U.N. and many other nations felt that Saddam should be dethroned now. If he loses, he will be known for doing what he thought was right, instead of what he thought was politically beneficial.

The worst way to miss someone is to be sitting right beside them knowing you can't have them.

Don't try to hard, the best things come when you least expect them to.
