Pink Thunder

Flying and All Up in the Face of Conventional Wisdom.

Lady Shōnagon Wonders

Lady Shōnagon Wonders If There's A Place
Without Rain

My name is not innocent of rain,
and my heart is no longer
innocent of you.

Lightning strikes
Twice
Yet the space between thunderclaps
spreads between us.

My eyes half hope
for the peace of stretching darkness
Half fear the flash

of your face and electric revelation.

Inspired, in part, by The Pillow Book of Sei Shōnagon which shows us how little has changed in human nature in 1000 years.

Haiku Inspired by Brokeback Mountain

Moon-spelled summer's eve
Cold night, two-man tent
Seized kisses. Belts unbuckle.

Daylight. Rough morning
Passion meets reality.
Two worlds change -- nightly

A dangerous love
Disruptive decisions made,
Loved ones compromised.

A dangerous love
Chanced death on discovery...
He's worth the trouble.

Til death do us part.
Lifelong lovers, they're
Loyal -- together, in memory.

Me and Mark Strand

I went to New York a couple of months ago. We were staying in Battery Park. As I passed the Irish Hunger Memorial to walk along the river, I thought of my grandfather's whispering to me that "sometimes a little birdie really did tell me" and that I should pay better attention to birds.

As I walked past the NYMEX building, I realized that our lives, in the life of the river, were so short -- as the butterfly's mere days on earth are to our decades. What can a butterfly accomplish in so little time? How important or how trivial are their loves, struggles and fears compared to ours.

I smiled, thinking of Chuang Tzu, the famed Chinese philosopher of long ago and his dream of being a butterfly. Or was he a butterfly dreaming he was a man?

Info: From The Source

Pink Thunder is lucky to have a lot of cousins (17 first cousins ~ not including spouses, kids, grandkids, etc). I'm proud to say that one of them has just self-published his first book of poetry. Here's a sample:

"Breaking Point" from Open Your Eyes
by Gary J. J. Boston

When we fight ourselves
And lose our will,
That's when we've lost our way.
When we've lost our way
And lost our hope,
That's when we've given up.
When we've given up and written off that which is life,
We've reached the point of invulnerability

Opposites

Defeat your fears with love.
Defeat your doubts with trust.
Defeat your anger with compassion.
Defeat your ignorance with inquiry.
Focus your mind and you can create the future.

Eternal Springtime

Throw open the doors of your heart
to the Eternal Springtime!
Is there still a winter's chill in the air?
No matter --

See...
The tiny fists of leaf and blossom
are relaxing, releasing, unfurling their splendor.

Feel...
The sun has new powers
to pull a rabbit out of his hat.

Smell...
The softening soil warms open
to the promise of fresh seed
and the light green grass to follow.

Listen...
Let the breeze dance round you
and blow the old dusty woes away.

Jungle Cat

The jungle cat sleeps
Claws slip sheathed, paws lie skyward
Rest - before the hunt.

For M.W. who told me I sleep like a lioness! (I like to think of myself as more of a tigress or jaguar...)

It's A Small, Small World

for Clarence

It's a Small, Small World

A young couple smiles and laughs
Settling, ginger, into the little boat.
With a lurch, the little boat is pulled
Forward into the shimmering cave.
The water is black as night; Night
Blots Day. Sky above and sea below
Seem as distant, as depthless as God.

There is music and children sweetly singing
Puppets in colorful costumes are dancing
Brightly lit and searing clear through the darkness

The man becomes a small boy again
Held in his father's strong, soft arms
That once kept a three year old safe.

There is just one moon
That father is gone now
And one golden sun
A boy's wonder and delight
And a smile means
Becomes a boy's nightmare and despair
Friendship to everyone

The darkness melts thirty years
Past is now present is then future
For the man knows what fate
Awaits the boy and his father
On the way home from DisneyWorld
In the singing, he can hear the silence screaming.

Where a great man's voice is stilled for all time.
Though the mountains are wide
The bright lights fade from a stage
And the oceans divide

Will this ride ever end?
It's a world of laughter/ A world of tears
The mouth of the tomb opens
It's a world of hopes/ And a world of fears

Blinking into the Florida sun
There's so much that we share
The song is ending.
That it's time we're aware

A woman's hand moves tears from a man's face
It's a small world
C?mon baby, let?s go.
after all.

Fragrant Heart

Fragrant heart blossoms
A rose arches to the sun.
Warm : you open me.
